The Ultimate Guide to Cardstock
There are several factors to consider when it comes to the physical and aesthetic experience of a deck of cards. The factors that will most impact this experience include size, paper type, core, weight and thickness, finish, and any decorative touches added.
Size
Size often comes down to personal preference, but if you intend to shuffle your deck of cards, you want a size that’s easy to handle. If the cards have gorgeous art on them, you may also want the cards big enough to appreciate the details in the artwork. In general, the more detailed the artwork, the bigger you’ll want the card so you can see it – but that needs to be balanced out with what’s comfortable to handle. The most common card size for Tarot cards is 2.75” wide by 4.75” tall. If your cards are not especially thick, this is generally a reasonable size to both see the artwork clearly and be able to shuffle the cards.
The sizes I’ve encountered for Tarot, Oracle and other decks within my personal collection include:
Jumbo 3.5″ x 5.5″
Unique/Oval 3.08″ x 5.5″
Oracle 3.5″ x 5″
Tarot 2.75″ x 4.75″
Poker 2.5″ x 3.5″
Peggy’s Guide to Say Yes to the Deck
So if you’ve seen any of my wife’s videos from her series “Say Yes to the Deck”, you’ll probably have some idea of where this guide is heading.
If you’ve never heard of “Say Yes to the Deck” let me break it down for you.
Once upon a time, my wife was looking for a fun idea for another video to post on her YouTube channel (go look). So, on one lazy afternoon (or morning or evening, whatever) Lisa realized that she’d have a lot of fun making a video that explores the decision making process of choosing a tarot deck. I got roped in somewhere along the way and the rest is history.
Since then, Lisa has done a semi-regular “Say Yes to the Deck” video where she chooses a new deck from a short list of 4-5 decks, and I make an appearance to talk her into the cheapest de… I mean help her make the most beneficial purchase for her needs.
This has also morphed into a second semi-regular series, “Helping You Say
Yes to the Deck” where I join my wife and I ever so kindly and gently (snortlaugh) help them make the best deck purchasing choices for their needs.
This guide is a compilation of some of the more common questions you’ll encounter in the videos as well as a breakdown on how and why the questions are important.

About the Illustrator:
Francesca Paiocchi is an Italian artist based in Milan. Graduated in art at high school, then attended the Illustration course at the International Comics School in Brescia where she specialized in illustration for publishing.
Among others, she worked with the publishing houses La Ruota and Edikit, creating illustrations for fantasy and weird books. She also illustrated several books and novels by foreign authors. Strongly inspired by the natural world since her childhood, her work mainly focuses on the use of various painting techniques and the union of naturalistic and fantasy subjects to create unique and original pieces. She’s also dedicated to the creation of polymer clay sculptures and photography in historical costume.

About the deck:
The Sassy Dragons Tarot is designed, first and foremost, to be easy to work with. With the meanings printed on every card, you can shuffle, pull a card, and receive your message immediately. There's no guidebook to refer to and nothing to memorize.

Andrew Rodgers and Christopher Penzel, two California-based artists, share a passion for illustration, tarot, and oracle cards. Andrew, from the Bay Area, focuses on digital and watercolor art, drawing inspiration from nature and spirituality passed down through his family. Christopher, from the Central Coast, specializes in character design with watercolor, charcoal, and digital media, while also managing their tarot-related projects. Both artists are deeply connected to divination, with Christopher finding early inspiration in scrying by campfire and Andrew through family traditions.
